NASA's Lessons Learned Information System (LLIS) is a web-based system developed as a tool that collects and makes available to the NASA workforce the lessons learned from four decades of aeronautics and space leadership. Lessons learned facilitate knowledge and understanding of safety, reliability, maintainability, and quality measures into design of flight and ground hardware, software, facilities, and procedures.
The aerospace community recognizes the need to capture, document, and apply the knowledge gained from past experience to current and future projects. These lessons learned help to avoid the repetition of past failures and mishaps. And, through the identification of what we did especially well, these lessons enable the promulgation of our best practices.
It is vital that we share our knowledge and wisdom gained throughout experiences. Seeking out the knowledge of others as well as making our own experiences available to others is critical to the continuous improvement of our individual and collective capabilities.
NASA policy has been specifically developed to support and capture the utilization of lessons learned. NPD 8621.1 - NASA Mishap Reporting and Investigating Policy, NPR 7120.5B - Program and Project Management Procedures and Requirements, and NPD 8710.2 - NASA Safety and Health Program Policy assist us in our responsibility to report lessons learned.
It is the responsibility of the NASA workforce to input lessons, utilize the database for reference, and learn from others. Please visit the Lessons Learned Information System (LLIS) and BECOME the difference. If you need assistance, please contact Gena Henderson, KSC's Data Manager for LLIS, at 321-867-4261.
